• In 1872, when their son Thomas' wife Mary died shortly after giving birth to a daughter Mary, James and Sarah took Mary and her brother William and raised them as their own. Mary and William's sister Rosa was raised by Emma Kingston (daugther of Sarah and James) and her husband John Bircher.

They came to Australia on the "Shenir" and landed in Brisbane on 25 August 1880. They immigrated as free passengers. Leah and her husband Richard Bennett remained in Stanley Street, South Brisbane. William was listed as William BENNETT not William Kingston.
  
• On 1 November 1882 James commenced a lease on 160 acres of land, lot 1094 County of Cook, Parish of Bundaberg on the Goodwood Road from Maryborough. He later purchased the land for 6 pence per acre a total of 4 pound when he applied to construct a homestead on the property in early 1888. Thomas Willliams and John Kingston declared that he had resided on the selection for the last 5 years from 1 November 1882. There were 2 acres 3 rods resumed by the railway. The Deed was passed on 10 May 1888 and valuation of improvements listed on the application were as follows:-
  Dwelling house (4 rooms in the course of construction) 10 Pound,
  303 rods of 2 rail fence @ 4/6 per rod 10 pound,
  1 acre of garden 20 pound,
  Well - 46 feet deep @10/- per foot 23 pound,
  Stockyard - 14 rods @ 1 pound per rod 14 pound,
  35 rods of 2 rail & pailing fence @ 8/- per rod 14 pound,
  ???? 14 pound - Total 159 pound.
  
• James Kingston died on 6 July 1901 in Maryborough Road, Bundaberg, Queensland, at age 78. His cause of death was senile decay. After his death Sarah moved in with her son John and his wife Alice until she died.
  
• James was buried on 7 July 1901 in Bundaberg General Cemetery. He is buried with his wife Sarah, and grandson Harold Dudley Kingston who died in 1926. There is no monument on their grave.
• COMPILERS NOTE: One of Agnes' sons compiled record from the original diary of Joseph Kingston on his voyage to Australia in 1878. Together with the transcript of the diary he indicates that "our grandparents James and Sarah Kingston with the following members of the family emigrated to Queensland landing in Maryborough in 1880 from the sailing ship "Scottish Lass" (actually the "Sheir").The following came out together. James and Sarah Kingston, son William and wife Ellen (actually came in 1883 on the "El Dorado"), son James and wife, I forget her name, daughter Sarah Ann, son John, daughter Patience, also Willie Kingston son of Tom Kingston and Polly Thorne Toms daughter. The only members of the family of James and Sarah Kingston left in England were the oldest son Thomas the father of Willie Polly and Ross Turner, Emma the oldest daughter and her husband John Bircher, Agnes Elizabeth and her husband John Poxon.
  Joseph sent the pages of the diary to his sister Agnes Elizabeth Poxon in 1878. We took care and preserved the document until her death in 1921. It then passed on to her son JW Poxon who has taken care of it. When in Australia I promised Uncle Jo's grandson Herbert Kingston of Maryborough, Queensland that he should have the document which he should receive by the end of 1965."

• At the age of 25 years and 4 months, James Kingston married Rose Ann Clark, daughter of George Clark and Martha Golley, on 9 February 1874 in Zion Chapel Primative Methodist Brownhills Raod, Walsall, Staffordshire, England. Witnesses to the wedding were Thomas and Leah Kingston.
• Some time after their marriage James and Rose Ann, who had no children of their own, adopted two girls:- Annie, Edith. Annie's surname was Douen, Doven, Downes or Davidson. An Annie Downes was born in October 1871 in Ellesmere, Shropshire.

• Some time after their marriage, and before they immigrated to Australia James and Rose adopted a child, Annie Downes. Annie had been born in 1871 in Ellesmere, Shropshire.
  
• James Kingston and Rose Ann Clark immigrated to Queensland circa 1880. James Kingston came with his wife Rose and adopted daughter Annie. They are said to have emigrated in 1880 possibly on the "Scottish Hero" or "Scottish Prince". Or they may have come in 1879 on the "Scottish Lass."
  
• Between 1880 and 1886 James Kingston lived in Bundaberg. In 1883 he was a leaseholder on Maryborough Road and in 1885 he was in Perry Street, Bundaberg.
  
• Between 1887 and 1898 James Kingston lived in Abington, Childers. James applied for a grant on land in the district on 7 February 1887 on Portion no 1318 in the County of Cook, Parish of Childers an area of 120 acres and 30 perches. The lease ran for 50 years from 1 July 1887 but was purchased on Deed of Grant on 21 November 1892.
  
• He and Rose Ann Clark appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1898 living at Abington, Childers.
• 1900, James Kingston and Rose Ann Clark moved to Toowoomba, Queensland.They may have decided to move so that they could keep their adopted daughter Elsie whose mother had by that time established a relationship with Alfred Birks.
  
• Between 1900 and 1914 James was listed in the Toowoomba Post office Directory. In 1900 they were living off Neil Street and working as a carpenter. From 1905-1907 they were listed at Creek Street on the left hand side from Horton Street. In 1908 they were living in Ruthven Street between Donation Lane and James Street on the left hand side from Margaret Street. Then from 1909 to 1914 James and Rose are listed as living in Neil Street between Herries and Joseph Streets (2 houses/shops from the end of the block). Rose is listed as a fruiterer. This place appears to have been sold as the 1915 Directory lists a John Home, fruiterer in this position.

• James Kingston died on 17 August 1915 in Toowoomba, Queensland, at age 66. He died from cardiac disease and heart failure. At the time of his death he was a baptist.
• James was buried on 19 August 1915 in Toowoomba Cemetery. The funeral left his home at 2.00pm. The undertaker was TS Burstow.

• He was a miner, working in a coal mine owned by millionare named Mr Harrison.
• John Kingston immigrated on 20 May 1880 with James Kingston and Sarah Henson. James Kingston and his wife Sarah, their daughter Leah and Richard Bennett, son John, daughter Patience and William and Mary (Polly) their grandchihldren left Plymouth on 20 May 1880. • John Kingston selected land - He had a lease of 50 years which commenced on 01 July 1886 for Lot 1128, County of Cook, Parish of Bundaberg on the Maryborough Road (now Goodwood Road). The Deed of Grant was given on 10 January 1893. He grew sugar cane and vegetables on his land and made charcoal for selling, during the off season on 23 June 1886.
  
• On 6 April 1893 the following article appeared in "The Brisabne Courier". We (Bundaberg Mail) regret to record a fatal accident which occurred about 7 o'clock on Tuesday morning at the Yellow Waterholes, about five miles from town, whereby a man named Peter Thygesen lost his life. The unfortunate circumstance occurred while two men--John Kingston and S. Chamber were tree felling on Thygesen's selection. The deceased was seated on a log, sharpening a saw, when a tree just cut swayed over and struck him on the back of the neck, crushing his head severely. Deceased was 36 years of age, married, leaving a wife and two children of tender years, who lived on a selection recently taken up by him. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, and the brethren will attend his funeral.
  
• At the age of 29 years, 5 months and 3 days, John Kingston married Alice Emily Elizabeth Ward, daughter of Ernest Augustus Ward and Elizabeth Jones, on 23 March 1894 in Wesleyan Parsonage, Bundaberg.
• John was a musician and played the cornet. He joined the Salvation Army Band. His children attended the Elliott State school while he and Alice lived on the farm.
  
• John Kingston appeared in the Post Office Directories of between 1905 and 1913. He was shown as living in Maryborough Road, Bundaberg.
• In 1909 the sugar cane farm was sold and John took up the position of Manager and Licensee of the hotel at Littlemore, which was owned by H T Christensen in Bundaberg. The family moved to Littlemore in March 1910 travelling by train to Miriam Vale and then by coach to Littlemore. His horses and cattle were trucked to Miriam Vale by train and drived over the Blackman's Range to the hotel.
  
• He and Alice Emily Elizabeth Ward appeared on the Federal Electoral Roll in 1913. They were shown as living in Bompa, Littlemore. His occupation was given as a hotel keeper and Alice's as home duties.

• On 14 August 1932,his wife, Alice Emily Elizabeth Ward died in Bundaberg, Queensland, at age 56. She died of broncho pneumonia.

John Thomas Kingston

• At the time of the 2 April 1871 census, Joseph Kingston was living in the household of James Kingston and Sarah Henson in No 5 Club Buildings, Friezland, Stonnall, Staffordshire. • At the age of 22 years, 5 months and 6 days, Joseph Kingston married Jane Ellen Tonks, daughter of Thomas Tonks and Edith Unknown, on 7 February 1876 in Walsall Wood, Staffordshire, England. When they were first married Joseph and Ellen lived in Lichfield Road Walsall, they later moved to "Oakley Cottage" Browshills Road, Walsall Wood. Joseph worked underground in a coal mine owned by Captain Harrison.
  
• Joseph Kingston and Jane Ellen Tonks immigrated on 16 December 1878. Joseph and Ellen arrived in Townsville on the "Scottish Prince" after departing from the East India docks in London on 6 September 1878. His sister Sarah Ann was on the same ship and also left the ship in Townsville. Their daughter Edith was with them. Their second daughter was still born on the ship, after Ellen had suffered a fall. Joseph kept a diary of their journey.
  
• Joseph and Ellen lived in Townsville for a few years where he set up a successful Drapery Store. They decided to move south to Bundaberg because of Jane's health.
  
• In 1881 Joseph Kingston lived in Cavin Street, North Bundaberg, Queensland. Joseph was a storekeeper.
• The following article appeared in the The Brisbane Courier on 8 July 1885. Joseph had been stabbed in the chest by a debtor --- "On Wednesday an occurrence as unusual as it was terrible caused a thrill of horror to run through our small community. On the morning in question a quiet inoffensive townsman named Joseph Kingston, lately a small storekeeper at North Bundaberg, called on Mrs. Condon, the wife of a bootmaker in Bourbon street, for the balance of an account amounting to 12s. 2d., The woman worked herself into a passion and declared that she did not owe the debt, which was incurred prior to her marriage some twelve months ago. A short altercation ensued, when she seized a knife and drove it with great force into Kingston's left breast. The unfortunate man was conveyed to Dr.' May's surgery, where a medical examination of the wound took place. In consequence of this the police-magistrate was sent for, and the apparently dying man's depositions were taken. The depth of the wound is 4in., the knife penetrating the left lung. Kingston was then removed to his own residence, where he remains in a critical condition. There is little hope of his life being saved, although every medical effort is brought into requisition to do so. The unhappy culprit, Alice Condon, was brought up before the court on Thursday, and remanded for eight days. Kingston is a married man, and has a young family."
  
• The following article appeared in the The Brisbane Courier on 1 October 1885.
  "Alice Condon, a young married woman, was charged with the attempted murder of Joseph Kingston, at Bundaberg. A second count for grievous bodily harm was entered. The evidence for the prosecution revealed that on the 8th July last Kingston went to the prisoner's shop with a bill for a small amount. Condon replied with some insulting observations, upon which Kingston left. Shortly after, whilst he was passing, the prisoner called to him that she wanted to pay the debt, but after some abuse similar to that previously given, she struck Kingston with a knife on the left breast. Medical testimony showed the wound to have been a most dangerous one. Three respectable witnesses deposed to the stabbing and to a threat of the woman just before the attack that she would rip the knife into Kingston's breast. For the defence it was alleged the woman received provocation, and that the stabbing resulted from accident. After three hours' deliberation, the jury returned a verdict of guilty of intent to do grievous bodily harm, and the prisoner was sentenced to ten years' penal servitude."
  
• On 2 November 1891 both Joseph Kingston and William Junior (son of Thomas) applied for the lease of a lot of land, Portion 918 in the County of Cook, Parish of Marathon (near Goodwood). It was 155 acres, 2 roods, 10 perches in area but both lost in the ballot.

• In 1903 the Isis scrub was opened up for settlement and Joseph, who had been running a successful store in Bundaberg, and his family moved to Childers. He set up a partnership with his son-in-law Bertie Crow and son John (Jack) in The Crow & Kingston Grocery and Drapery Store in Childers. They ran this store for about 30 years. Around 1925, the business was taken over by two of his grandsons John (Jack) and William (Bill) who changed the name to Kingston and Kingston.
  
• He's last child Mervyn was born after 1904. Mervyn's birth registation has not been found, but he was left property when his father Joseph died in 1946.
  
• He appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1905 living at Childers. He was listed as a storekeeper.
• He appeared in the Post Office Directory between 1905 and 1906. He was shown as living in Childers.He is listed at CROW & KINGSTON.
• In 1909 and 1927 Joseph visited England.
• He appeared on the Electoral Roll between 1913 and 1922 living at Childers. His occupation is given as a draper. On the 1925 Electoral role his occupation was given as a storekeeper.
  
• The Kingston's also acquired Sykse's Cordial Factory which stood on the corner of Macrossan and Broadhurst's Streets. When Joseph died it passed to his son Mervyn who eventually closed it down. They also owned the first store built in Apple Tree Creek by the Anderson family. It was washed away in a flood in 1937, rebuilt on highter ground but eventually closed down.
  
• He appeared in the Queensland Post Office Directory between 1921 and 1922. He was shown as living in Childers.He is listed as a draper.
  
• Joseph Kingston died on 1 October 1946 in Crescent Street, Childers, Queensland, at age 93.
• Joseph was buried on 2 October 1946 in Apple Tree Creek Cemetery, Queensland. Headstone Reads: Jane Ellen beloved wife of Joseph Kingston 5 May Aged 65. Joseph Kingston Died 1946 Aged 92.
  
  The Funeral service was from the Metodist Church, Childers on Wednesday morning. Joseph was a Methodist lay preacher.

• On 10 January 1872,Mary Kingston's mother, Mary Bircher died in Friesland Lane, Shenstone, Staffordshire, at age 25. She died of epilepsy the day after her daughter Mary was born. Her mother in law Sarah Kingston was present at the time of her death. When Mary died Emma (Thomas' sister) and John Bircher (Mary's brother) brought up Rosa. Rosa may have gone to Emma and John before her mother died as she was living with them at the time of the 1871 census. Grandmother Sarah Kingston brought up Mary (Polly) and William.
