It is with feeling of deep regret and much sympathy for the relatives that the news of the passing in her sleep of Mrs Margaret Jane Johnston of "Ellenthorpe" Tenterfield was received last Friday morning. The deceased lady was very well known and most highly respected by a large circle of friends in this district and on the Richmond. Her passing removes one who has endeared herself to many by her kindly sympathy and generous spirit.
The late Mrs Johnston was the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas Black and was born at Gerringong in 1854, being 78 years old at the time of her death. Her father was an Ulster man with Huguenot strain in his ancestry. Her mother was the daughter of the nephew of Governor Hindmarsh, a Governor of South Australia in its early days.
Her father was a great churchman and was acknowledged to have been one of the pillars of South Coast Methodism. The deceased lady followed in the footsteps of her parents, and was an ardent church worker from the age of 16 years, and for many years was the Vice President of the Ladies' Church Aide Society of the Tenterfield Methodist Church.
After her marriage to Mr David Johnston 57 years ago, they lived at "Omega Retreat", Gerringong, being engaged in the dairy industry. Later they moved to Richmond River, and after 15 years pioneering the Big Scrub, they moved, with their young family to Tenterfield, where they have lived for the past 32 years. On the 4 May 1925 they celebrated their golden wedding amidst a happy gathering of family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, six sons and two daughters. The daughters are Miss Maude Johnston and Mrs S J Staines. The sons are Jack, Thomas, Cyril, George, Ralph, and James. One son Norman paid the supreme sacrifice at the Great War.
There are 32 grandchildren and three great grand children. Three brothers also survive- Messers Robert, John and William Black together with five sisters Mrs W H East, Mrs J Dinning (Sydney), Mrs George Morrow (Roseville), and the Misses Charlotte and Isobel Black (Sydney).
The funeral directed by Mr J P Cooper, was very well attended on Saturday afternoon, when there was a large representation of all sections of the community gathered to pay their last tribute of respect. The service was conducted at the home and at the graveside by Rev W H Willey who spoke in complimentary terms of the consistent life of the deceased. There was a great number of beautiful floral tributes sent by sympathetic friends. The remains were laid to rest in the Methodist portion of the local Cemetery.
