They were part of the second fleet of ships commissioned by The New Zealand Company to bring settlers to the area around Nelson on the South Island of New Zealand.
  • Thomas Samuel Tidd witnessed the marriage of John Holdaway and Amelia Eyles on 7 August 1842; They were married the same day as Amelia's sister Mary to David Norgate.The marriage was most likely from necessity as John had four young children to care for and Amelia had two. They went on to have another 11 children. The certificate shows that John was a labourer born Lasham, a widower. Amelia was from Madshad (Medsted), a widow. They were married by Charles Waring, sexton. John signed with his mark as did Amelia. Present were Thomas Samuel Tidd, Elizabeth Tidd and Mary Norgate.

For further particulars apply to the Auctioneer. Trafalgar-street, October 6."

Thomas Henry Tidd, heard in Palmerston yesterday, the petitioner (for whom Mr. Ongley appeared) sued for a dissolution of marriage on the ground of adultery. The petitioner in her evidence stilted that she had been married to the respondent at Feilding on August 22, 1899, and there had been eight children born of the union. Everything went well until about eight years ago, when the parties were living at Mangaweka. She had then reason to suspect undue intimacy between the respondent and a woman who was living in the house, but he denied the accusation. She (petitioner) had left the house to earn her own living as a waitress, and after that her husband had taken to drinking heavily. She bad reason to believe that he was living with another woman while she was earning her own living, and she put in a letter from him making certain admissions. Corroborative evidence having been given by two witnesses, his Honour granted a decree nisi, to be made absolutely in three months, with costs on the lowest scale against the respondent."

William is shown as a 31 year old born Cockham, Berkshire - a working gardener. He was living with his wife Sarah, 26, born Harefield, Middlesex and children Douglas 7, born Earling, Middlesex; William D 5, born Barnes, Surry; and his father William aged 77 born Rotherwick, Hampshire, a former shepherd.

  • On 5 December 1935 Elsie was involved in an accident at Amberley - The Courier-Mail reported “Six Persons Injured IPSWICH, Wednesday.
    Six persons suffered minor injuries this morning when a motor car that was being driven to the Downs crashed into a culvert at Amberley.
    The car, owned by Mr. S. A. Kroutz [Krautz], of Goombungee, was travelling along the Normanby Road, when, about a mile and a half beyond the Amberley school, a car approached from the other direction. In endeavouring to pass it, Mr. Kroutz's vehicle ran over the bank and struck a culvert. All seven occupants were severely shaken, and only one escaped injury from the impact or from cuts from glass, when the windscreen broke. All were motored to Ipswich, where it was found that Miss Elsie Tigell, of Crow's Nest, was the only one whose injuries were serious enough to warrant ambulance treatment. She suffered cuts about the face and head, and shock. The car was wrecked."
