Ann Hurst

  • Ann Hurst was born on 16 July 1819. She was the daughter of Phillip Hurst.
  • At the age of 19 years, 3 months and 25 days, Ann Hurst married Joseph Primmer, son of Benjamin Primmer and Martha Newland, on 10 November 1838 in East Meon, Hampshire. [The surname was spelt PRIMER on the marriage record]. He was a labourer of East Meon, his father Benjamin was deceased. Ann's father was Philip Hurst a labourer. Ann was a minor, spinner-servant. Both lived at East Meon.
  • Ann Hurst and Joseph Primmer immigrated to New Zealand on 15 March 1842. Joseph 30, an agricultural labourer and Ann 24 travelled on the Bolton with their children Benjamin, aged 9 months and Ann 2. Ann died on the voyage.
  • On 17 November 1873,her husband, Joseph Primmer died in Richmond, Nelson, New Zealand, at age 66. The Colonist reported - "Mr Joseph Primmer when walking on the road near his house at Richmond, on November 17th, about two p.m, in company with Mr John Sutton, suddenly fell down dead. The cause of death is supposed to be heart disease. Mr Primmer had been complaining the last few days of unusual pain in the region of the heart."
  • Ann Hurst testified in court at the hearing of Police vs Noah Primmer and Leonard Primmer on 11 September 1895; The Nelson Evening Mail reported:- "At the Brightwater Magistrate's Court today, the case Police v Leonard Primmer and Noah Primmer was called on. Mr Harley appeared for the defendants. Applications were made for prohibition orders. The application in respect of Leonard Primmer was partly heard, evidence being given by Ann Primmer, mother of the defendant, to the effect that his conduct on account of drink was past all bearing." The witness was continuing, when Mr Harley, who had conferred with defendants, said that his clients would consent to the granting of the order. The Bench granted an older to be operative for 12 months and to apply to the Nelson Licensing District and that portion of the Waimea Sounds District as far as Belgrove and Moutere. His Worship (Mr Heaps), said the order would also apply to breweries"
    In June 1896 they were both fined 5s for being on a hotel premises while prohibited.
  • Edward Primmer visited his family in New Zealand. The Bruce Herald reported - "Mr N Primmer [believe this should be E not N], from Queensland, recently paid a visit to his brother, Mr G. C. Primmer, at Lakeside. Mr Primmer is a butcher with a good business in Brisbane, and has not been in New Zealand for 29 years, and naturally sees a great difference in the country. Mr Primmer intends paying a visit to his mother who living in Nelson before returning home."
  • Ann Hurst died on 23 August 1916 at age 97.
  • Ann Hurst's orbituary appeared in the Nelson Evening Star on 24 August 1916. It read:- "MRS JOSEPH PRIMMER
    The death occurred yesterday, at the great age of 97, of Mrs Joseph Primmer, who was amongst the first settlers in the Nelson Province. Born in England, she came out to Nelson with her husband in the ship Bolton in 1842, and the intervening period of 74 years has been wholly spent in the district. Her first home was in the Maitai, and subsequently lived in Poor Man's Valley, Stoke, and Richmond. For the past seven years she had lived with her daughter, Mrs McDonald, of Collingwood-street, where she died after an illness of three weeks. She celebrated her 97th birthday on July 16th. For some time past she had been blind, and somewhat frail, but her memory was retentive, and she could recall and relate incidents in her early life in the province. Her husband died over 40 years ago. She had a family of sixteen children, of whom twelve are living and there are also upwards of 60 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. The late Mrs Primmer was a member of the Methodist Church, and was for a long period an active worker in connection therewith."
  • Ann was buried on 27 August 1916 in Richmond Cemetery.
