  • The following article appeared in the Carins Morning Post on 30 May 1908. "A BRAVE WOMAN - On Friday last, says Mrs. M. A. Brown, in a letter to the Toowoomba "Chronicle," of the 11th inst., a serious accident was averted on the Goombungee - Crow's Nest Road by resident was returning towards Crow's Nest in a sulky with his two children, aged six and four years respectively. Having dropped his whip, the father alighted to recover it, when the horse, usually quiet, though young, became alarmed and dashed off. The children screamed, this frightened the horse still more. He raced along the track towards Cooby Creek. The father was helpless in an agony of suspense as to what would be the fate of his offsprings. Mrs. L. D. Ward, coming from Meringandan, had just crossed the creek when she saw the animal and his precious freight approaching at full speed. The brave woman realised the situation at a glance. Without a moment's hesitation, she got down from her conveyance, coolly tied up her horse, and pre- pared to stop the bolting creature ------ risk of her life. When the horse, which fortunately kept the track, arrived, Mrs. Ward sprang resolutely forward, grasped the rein with one hand and the horse's mane with the other. The heroine was lifted clean off her feet and dragged along for about a chain, but she did not release her grip. She spoke soothingly to the horse all the time I was nearby and witnessed the accident, but before I could reach the spot Mrs. Ward had stopped the horse. When the owner came up the courageous woman was patting and reassuring the horse. She then re- signed it to its master, and proceeded to pacify the terrified children. One had been thrown on to the frontal board and had cut his lip, and the other was hanging between the wheel and the sulky. The latter would probably have been dragged to death had the rescuer not succeeded in stopping the animal. This brave woman simply attended to the children and then quietly left before she could be thanked and before inquiries could be made as to whether she herself had sustained any injuries. I think her action is worthy of recognition by the Humane Society."
