Charles Ferrier

David Ferrier

  • David Ferrier was born on 23 April 1849 in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. He was the son of James FERRIER (1810-1884) and Mary MIDDLEMISS (1818-1904.)
  • In 1877 David Ferrier settled at "Bynong", Surat having lived with his family in Coleraine, Victoria. His borther Duncan settled at "Nellybri". David was credited with inventing the Ferrier Wool Press in 1876, although other sources state it was James Ferrier, his father, in Coleraine, Victoria.
  • At the age of 41 years, 9 months and 24 days, David Ferrier married Alice Mabel Neal on 16 February 1891 in St Paul's Presbetryan Church, Leichhart Street, Brisbane, Queensland. Their marriage notice appeard in The Brisbane Courier - "FERRIER-NEAL.-On the 16th February, at St Paul's Presbyterian Church, Leichhardt-street, by the Rev. J. F. M'Swaine, David Ferrier, of Rosevale, Surat, to Alice Mabel Neal, of Surat". They lived at "Bynog.", Surat. Alice and the girls settled in Crow's Nest sometime around 1940.
  • David Ferrier died on 21 December 1917 in Newfarm, Brisbane, Queensland, at age 68.
  • David was buried on 22 December 1917 in Toowong Cemetery. His son James is buried with him.
  • On 15 August 1919 The Western Argus newspaper reported "Probates Re-sealed. David Ferrier, late of Brynong, Queensland, to Claude Ulnnack as attorney for Alice Mabel Ferrier and others, £1778."

  • Joseph Ferrier and Annie Florence (Florence Ann) Magree appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1943 living at Cooyar Station. Jospeh is shown as a grazier; Florence carried out domestic duties. His mother Alice and sisters Muriel and Mabel were farmers at Sylvia Vale, Crow's Nest.
  • Joseph Ferrier died on 16 May 1989 in Queensland at age 88.
  • Joseph was buried in Redcliffe Cemetery.

  • On 6 July 1929 Murial and Mabel attended a dance at Surat as reported in the Brisbane Courier on 6 July 1929 :-" Prior to her departure from the Surat District Hospital, the matron, Miss Florence Magree, was tendered a farewell dance, given by Dr. Braccei and Sister N. Anderson, assisted by Nurses G. Hirzlg and M. Price. The invited guests included Mr. and Mrs. J. Ferrier, Mr. and Mrs. Colin Taylor, Mr. and Mrs. J. Laing, Misses Muriel and Mabel Ferrier, Nurse M. Power (Brisbane), Messrs. Joseph Ferrier, T. M'Gowan, G. H. Montgomery, Jack O'Keefe, and T. J. Naylor."
  • She and Muriel Ferrier moved to Sylvia Vale, Emu Creek, Crow's Nest, between 1930 and 1940.with their mother Alice who died there in 1945. Their brother Joseph Ferrier may have moved to Crow's Nest some time before 1940 as his wife, Mrs Joe Ferrier of Crow's Nest was included in a holiday party at Surfers Padise in February 1940.
  • On 17 June 1933 Mabel attended a meeting of the Fairholme Old Girls at Fairholme School in Toowoomba.
  • Mabel Ferrier appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1943 living at "Sylvia Vale", Crow's Nest. Mabel and Muriel were farmers as was their mother Alice who lived with them. Their brother Joseph was a grazier at Cooyar Station.

  • Sometime between 1954 and 1958 the Ferrier family moved away from Emu Creek. The property was sold to Kevin Stark but the old house remained on the property for many years. I can remember seeing it as a child.
