Having tried his luck unsuccessfully on the Gympie gold fields he moved to Toowoomba in 1868. In 1870 he established a Toowoomba plumbing business which he conducted for over thirty years. Filshie is better known for the timber merchandising business he established with James Broadfoot and James Marks in 1884, when they acquired the Hampton sawmill as Filshie, Broadfoot & Co. By 1912 this successful firm was one of the largest in Queensland. The Filshie connection with timber ended in 1987 with the closure of a 41-year-old cabinet making business by grandsons Earle and Ian Filshie
Like many successful businessmen, Robert Filshie was involved with his local community, serving on the local council, and was active as a founder and prominent member of the Toowoomba Caledonian Society, and as a freemason." - At the age of 21 years, Robert Walker Filshie married Janet McGregor Murray in 1864 in Brisbane, Queensland.

- In 1887,his wife, Mary Ann McDougall Fraser died in Queensland.
- Robert Walker Filshie died on 10 March 1912 in Queensland.
- His obituary appeared in the Darling Downs Gazette on 11 March 1912. " After a long illness, during which he suffered at times much pain, Mr. Robert Filshie died early last evening. His death closes another link that joined the old and new Toowoomba. From the sixties until a few years ago he took an active part in the commercial life of the city, and also to some extent in its public life. In both he earned the confidence and esteem of the public. Mr. Filshie was born in Old Kilpatrick, a small village on the Clyde, in Dumbarton. His father conducted the Auchintoshan Distillery, together with farming, and the whiskey distilled there was well known throughout Scotland. He spent his early days in Old Kilpatrick, and was later apprenticed to a plumber in Glasgow, where he thoroughly learned the business. Australia was, at that time, commanding much attention and with numbers of other Glasgow young men Mr. Filshie decided to try his luck in Queensland. He arrived in Queensland in the ship 'Ocean Chief' in November 1862, landing in Brisbane. He followed plumbing in Brisbane until, the discovery of Gympie, when he joined in the rush to that goldfield. His luck however, was not in, and doing no good in mining, he returned to Brisbane and decided to try the Darling Downs. He arrived in Toowoomba in 1868 and started on his own account in the plumbing business in 1870, which business he conducted with great success until about ten years ago, and which is conducted to-day by Mr. J. Fitzpatrick. Mr Filshie was identified with other businesses in Toowoomba. In 1882, he started, together with Mr. Porrit, the Reliance Foundry, in Russell-street, just above the Governor Blackall hotel, but subsequently sold out. In 1884 he, in conjunction with Mr. James Broadfoot ami Mr. Jas. Marks, purchased the Hampton saw mill from Mr. Cocks and from that small inception grew the immense business to-day known as the Toowoomba Sawmills, one of the largest concerns of its kind in the State and holding one of the largest areas of timber country. He took a keen interest in public affairs, was for some years an alderman in the City Council, and was also a prominent member of the original Caledonian Society which conducted the New Year sports so successfully., Some years ago he paid a visit to Scotland, travelling through America. His eldest son Alex, is in business in San Francisco, and the second son, Bert, is in Toowoomba. There are also four daughters, the only married one being Mrs. M. McLeod. The members of the Southern Cross Masonic Lodge will leave the Masonic Hall this afternoon at 2 o'clock to attend the funeral."
