James Conrad Hurst Primmer

• James Conrad Hurst Primmer was born on 23 April 1887 in Ashburton, New Zealand.

• On 18 May 1918 the following appeard in The Brisbane Courier - "Mr Walsh (instructed by Messrs Stephens and Tozer) appeared for the plaintiff. There was no appearance for the defendant or co-defendant. This was a case in which William Henry Dodd, of Wellington road. Woolloongabba, a packer, petitioned for a dissolution of marriage with May Dodd (formerly Keenan), on the grounds of her misconduct with James Conrad Primmer of Woolloongabba, tram motor man, from whom plaintiff claimed £500 as damages.
  The petition showed that the plaintiff and defendant were married at St John's Cathedral Ann street, Brisbane, on October 1, 1913, and lived happily together at Nile street, Woolloongabba, up to June 29 1915 on which date plaintiff departed with the AIF on active ser- vice. The petition further set out that during February, 1917, and divers other occasions at Cleveland road, Coorparoo the defendant committed misconduct with James Conrad Primmer, of Woolloon gabba, tram motor man, and a male child was born on November 18, 1917, at Cleveland road, of which co-defendant was the father.
  The plaintiff gave evidence to the effect that he joined the forces early in 1915, and left for the Front on perfectly amicable terms with his wife. On his return he was met by his mother and father, who showed him a birth certificate of a child his wife had given birth to during his absence and of which he was not the father. He then instructed his solicitor to take proceedings for divorce.
  Evidence was given by the officer of the court to the effect that when he served the co defendant with the necessary documents in the case he admitted that he was the father of the child.
  The jury found the issues proved, and assessed the images at £400
  His Honour then granted a decree nisi for a dissolution of the marriage to be moved absolute after the expiration of three months and entered judgment against the co-defendant for £400 and costs. The plaintiff was given custody of his own child, which is now in his
  possession.

• Jane Primmer and Daniel Eyles immigrated to Nelson, South Island, New Zealand, on 24 September 1841. The Eyles family - Daniel 44, an agricultural labourer, Jane 44, Mary 23, a servant, William 18, and agricultural labourer, Jane 16 a servant, John 11, Benjamin 10, Ann 13 and Ezra 2 left from London on the Mary Ann, captained by Bolton arriving at Nelson NZ on 5 February 1842. They were part of the second fleet of ships commissioned by The New Zealand Company to bring settlers to the area around Nelson on the South Island of New Zealand. Their daughter Amelia's husband Thomas Cresswell was on the Whitby, part of the first fleet sent to settle Nelson. Ezra Eyles died on the voyage. The family encountered very hard conditions. They lived in a hut made of Manuka and clay while other families endured in houses consisting of four poles and a fern leaf roof. According to family hearsay one poor man was brought to the Eyles home and laid on the mud floor because his house was not weather proof. It is also said that Jane and her daughter Ann collected flat stones from the river, and using some clay Daniel had collected to plug holes in the wall, build an "oven around the wall and put in what they called on ship a boulli tin for a flue". That was the first chimney. Conditions were wet for the first few months and sickness was rife. Then when the New Zealand Company went broke food was scarce. Over a five week period they only had one loaf of bread in the house and could not purchase tea and sugar. If not for the potatoes they would have starved and Daniel found it difficult to find work. Anne had waited in line for more than an hour sometimes and then missed out at the bakehouse. The family didn't own the land but were squatters.
  The entry in the Embarkation Register for the family is Eyles, Daniel (wife Jane), agric labourer, 44; 3 boys 11,10,3; 1 girl 13. Mary servant 23; William agric labourer 18; Jane servant 16. Their address on the application register was Lasham. The family was recommended by a M Crowley.

Senior Sergeant Sullivan, who prosecuted, said that the occurrence had taken place on the mail train from
  Brisbane when it was near Tiaro. Evidence was given by Hedley Bovard, police constable, stationed at Maryborough, who stated that he knew the defendant. He saw him at the Police Station about 10 o'clock that morning, when he read to him a warrant, which he produced. He made no reply. He took defen dant to the watch-house and arrested him on the charge mentioned in the warrant. Senior-Sergeant Sullivan asked for a remand until Wednesday next. He did not object to bail being granted. The defendant said he desired to obtain bail, which was allowed, accused in a sum of £50 and two sureties of £25 or one of £50.

• John Foster Roy (Jack) Primmer died on 20 November 1941 at age 19. He was aboard the HMAS Sydney when she sank off the coast of Western Australia. The loss of HMAS Sydney (II) is Australia’s greatest naval tragedy. Its disappearance in 1941 without a trace left a legacy of uncertainty for decades. In March 2008, renewed efforts to find the Sydney came to fruition, confirming her fate and bringing closure to the mystery.
  Celebrated for her successful battles in the Mediterranean, where she famously sank the Italian cruiser Bartolomeo Colleoni, HMAS Sydney (II) and her crew of predominantly young men received a hero’s welcome on her return to Australia in February 1941. She was then tasked with escorting troopships to South East Asia, following an Indian Ocean route along the west coast of Western Australia.
  It was on the return of one of these voyages that she encountered the German Raider HSK Kormoran, on 19 November 1941. The Kormoran was disguised as a Dutch merchant vessel that was seemingly incompetent at returning the Sydney's signals, unaware, the Sydney approached the unknown vessel. Once within range where her superior armament could not advantageously defend her, the Komoran used the advantage of surprise and brought all its armament to bear on the Sydney While neither ship survived, the Sydney was lost with all hands - a complement of 645 young men. 318 of the Kormoran’s complement of 390 survived.

• On 7 December 1903 John's obituary appeared in the Ashburn Guardian "- The death is reported of Mr John William Primmer, of East Street, a well known and respected resident of Ashburton. The deceased died at two o'clock on Sunday afternoon, the cause of death being consumption. Mr Primmer was born in Nelson, where he was for many years well known as a hunter of big game, a cricketer, and a member of the local Cavalry Corps. He came to this district some nineteen years a go, and was for some little time after his arrival engaged in cattle and sheep dealing on his own account, afterwards entering the employ of Mr Jas. Buckley, of Lagmhor Estate, with whom he remained for about sixteen year 3, residing at Tinwald. Mr Primmer came to Ashburton about a year ago, and started a restaurant in East Street, He leaves a widow, a son, and a married daughter (Mrs H. Hewson). The funeral' takes place to-morrow at 2.30 at the Ashburton Cemetery."
  

Joseph Primmer

• At the age of 31 years, 7 months and 5 days, Joseph Primmer married Ann Hurst on 10 November 1838 in East Meon, Hampshire. [The surname was spelt PRIMER on the marriage record]. He was a labourer of East Meon, his father Benjamin was deceased. Ann's father was Philip Hurst a labourer. Ann was a minor, spinner-servant. Both lived at East Meon.
  
• Joseph Primmer and Ann Hurst immigrated to New Zealand on 15 March 1842. Joseph 30, an agricultural labourer and Ann 24 travelled on the Bolton with their children Benjamin, aged 9 months and Ann 2. Ann died on the voyage.
  
• On 17 February 1844 Joseph was listed as a labourer of Maitai in the Nelson Examiner. On 15 Feb 1845 he was listed as a dairyman of Maiati Valley. In 1846 he was listed as a cowkeeper, then a labourer in 1847. From 1848-1850 he was a farmer at Suburban south. He has some unclaimed letters over the next few years, and was amongst lists of names urging people to nominate for election. His name was on a Petition of Settlers to Parliament in 1849. He continued to be listed as a farmer at Waimea East until 1861. In August 1861, the birth of a daughter was announced (Harriet). In 1862 he was listed as owning £1 /13s in rates to the Roads Board.
  
• Joseph Primmer died on 17 November 1873 in Richmond, Nelson, New Zealand, at age 66. The Colonist reported - "Mr Joseph Primmer when walking on the road near his house at Richmond, on November 17th, about two p.m, in company with Mr John Sutton, suddenly fell down dead. The cause of death is supposed to be heart disease. Mr Primmer had been complaining the last few days of unusual pain in the region of the heart."
  
• On 20 November 1873 an inquest was held into his death - The Colonist reported- An inquest was held last week on the body of Mr Joseph Primmer, an old and respected settler at Richmond, who dropped down dead on Monday last. From the evidence it appeared that he was at the time walking along the road with Mr John Sutton, who was talking of the price of oats, saying that they were then 6s 6d a bushel. Mr Primmer replied Yes, and they'll soon be .... when he staggered and fell. He was immediately picked up and found to be quite dead. He had before been suffering from heart disease, and his death was ascribed to that cause.

Richmond" and ""NOTICE is hereby given that on and after the 17th day of August, 1880, the provisions of "The Cattle Trespass Act, 1868," will be enforced on my land, known as Trower's Gully, Richmond, and that it is my intention to claim Damages for all Cattle Trespassing on the said Land, whether the same shall be fenced or uninclosed. LEONARD PRIMMER."

• On 11 September 1895 The Nelson Evening Mail reported:- "At the Brightwater Magistrate's Court today, the case Police v Leonard Primmer and Noah Primmer was called on. Mr Harley appeared for the defendants. Applications were made for prohibition orders. The application in respect of Leonard Primmer was partly heard, evidence being given by Ann Primmer, mother of the defendant, to the effect that his conduct on account of drink was past all bearing." The witness was continuing, when Mr Harley, who had conferred with defendants, said that his clients would consent to the granting of the order. The Bench granted an older to be operative for 12 months and to apply to the Nelson Licensing District and that portion of the Waimea Sounds District as far as Belgrove and Moutere. His Worship (Mr Heaps), said the order would also apply to breweries"
  In June 1896 they were both fined 5s for being on a hotel premises while prohibited.
