William James Barnes

  • William James Barnes was born on 11 December 1869 in Gowrie Creek.

  • On 2 October 1882,William James Barnes's mother, Mary Ann Maddern died in Gowrie Creek, Queensland, at age 42. Mary Ann died from typhoid fever just three and a half weeks after her nineth child Ida May was born.
  • At the age of 26 years, 9 months and 9 days, William James Barnes married Mary Ann (Polly) Askin, daughter of Richard Askin and Emma Thatcher, on 20 September 1896 in Emu Creek, Queensland.

    A holiday trip for a Subinspector and his wife ended in tragedy, 20 miles from here today.
    Killed when their car rolled over a 50 ft deep ravine, was Mrs Ethel Chambers, 44, wife of Sub-Inspector J B Chambers of Townsville.
    The couple with a passenger, Leonard Norman, 62, were driving from Mt Morgan to Rockhampton when the car blew a tyre on the steep winding road and plunged down the steep range. Sub-Inspector Chambers and Norman were only slightly injured."
  • The following article appeared in the Monto Herald on 18 January 1962. Sister of Local Man Killed. The sister of a well known local farmer, Mr Len Norman, and wife of Townsville Sub-Inspector J. B. Chambers, was killed instantly when a utility driven by her husband hurtled 130 feet down a ravine six miles from Mt Morgan, on 13 January.

They lived on Portion 4 Emu Creek which was about 2 1/2 miles from the proposed new school as compared to 4 miles from the Mossview School which because of the distance they had not been attending.
  • On 17 November 1934,her husband, John Alexander McRae died in Queensland at age 74.
  • Ellen Philomina Barry and Kathleen McRae appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1943 living at Emu Creek. They carried out home duties.
