  • At the age of 21 years, Isabella McGregor married Robert Cuthbertson (Bob) Reid on 24 April 1861 in the residence of Mary and William McGregor, Nelsons Plains, Hunter Valley, New South Wales. Robert was a 22 year old carpenter of Sydney born Paisley Scotland, and Isabella a 20 year old servant of Sydney, born in Maitland. John McGregor and Margaret Reid were witnesses to the marriage. William McGregor gave his consent to the marriage as Isabella was not of age. The marriage was performed in accordance with the rites of the Presbyterian Church.
  • Isabella McGregor died on 29 October 1891 in 91 St Johns Road, Forest Lodge (Glebe), Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, at age 51. The cause of death was "paralysis and exhaustion."
  • Isabella was buried on 30 October 1891 in the Presbyterian Cemetery, Rockwood.
  • In May 2000 the house at 91 St Johns Road, was still standing, according the rector of the nearby St John's Anglican Church "much the same as it would have been in Isabella's day - a terrace cottage, complete with 'lace' balcony and still, by all accounts, a private residence."

  • She witnessed the marriage of John McGregor and Elizabeth Fountain on 19 July 1864 in the home of Henry and Lucy Fountain, Raymond Terrace, New South Wales; At the time of the marriage John was a 22 year old farmer of Nelson's Plains and Elizabeth a 21 year old of Raymond Terrace. John's father William McGregor was a farmer and Henry Fountain, Elizabeth's father, a blacksmith. The ceremony was held according to the rites of the Wesleyan Church.
  • At the age of 28 years, 4 months and 15 days, Janet McGregor married George Michael Woods, son of George Woods and Sarah Ann Fleet, on 19 October 1874 in Bringelly, Liverpool, New South Wales. . George Michael and Jane were married at the McGregor family home by Edward Holland, Presbyterian Minister. Witnesses to the marriage were Jane's brother John McGregor and James Bell.

  • Janet McGregor's and George Michael Woods's first child Emma Fleet was born on 16 July 1875 in 96 Albion Street, Surry Hills. She died when she was almost one year old and was buried on her birthday. The following notice appeared in "The Sydney Morning Herald" - THE FRIENDS of Mr. GEORGE MICHAEL WOODS, Butcher, are invited to attend the Funeral of his late deceased DAUGHTER, Emma Fleet : to move from his residence, 96 Albion-street, Surry Hills, on SUNDAY, at a quarter to 2 o'clock, for the Necropolis. J. and G. SHYING and CO.,Undertakers, 719, George-st.[:CR:]
  • In 1883 Janet McGregor and George Michael Woods lived in Ballina, New South Wales, Australia. Family hear say has it that he was apprenticed to a Pastry Cook when the family first came to Australia, and later became a butcher first class. George and Jane(t) lived in North Sydney where he started a butcher shop after they were married. However due to the amount of standing he had to leave this line of work and they moved to Teven in 1883 when Donald was just 1 and a half years old.
  • In 1894 Janet McGregor and George Michael Woods lived on Portion 40a, Parish of Teven.
  • Jane or Jean McGregor witnessed the birth of Elizabeth May (Betty) Staines on 13 October 1903 in Upper Teven, New South Wales, Australia; Her father Will was a farmer born Alstonville. Witnesses to her birth were C B Street, Mrs Woods (most likely her grandmother Jane Woods, and Mrs Warne.
  • On 29 August 1911 she received a post card at Teven Creek, from her son Robert. It read
    "Well I am getting good dry weather for travelling; my cold is getting better now. I called on Mrs Law yesterday evening. They are all well. I trust this will find you improving a lot. Your loving son Rob." The postcard was written in Ulmara.
  • Janet's daughter Ruby wrote to Ethel Staines (her sister) regarding her mother's health on 4 October 1911.
    "Teven Wednesday. Dear E. Just a few lines to let you know how we are. Mother seems very much better this last few days and thinks the Dr told her all wrong. We are having it dry down here. I am going to Ballina so will have to hurry as its half holiday today. Hope all are well. Love to all from Ruby."
  • Janet McGregor died on 6 April 1912 in Teven, Ballina, New South Wales, at age 65. At the time of her death Jane had been suffering from pulmonary phthisis for over three months. She died of heart failure.

  • Jess (Janet) McGregor was christened on 28 June 1838 in Kingussey and Insch, Inverness.
  • She immigrated to Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, on 15 November 1838. She came to Australia on the St George with her parents, William and Mary. Recorded on the ships log as Janet not Jess and her birth month was given as May.
  • Jess (Janet) McGregor died in 1844 in New South Wales. Her death certificate shows her as Jesse Macgregor. Jess is pet name for Janet. The only other information given was that she was an infant. It seems likely that this is the correct Jesse as her mothers death certificate shows one daughter by second marriage deceased.

  • John McGregor and Elizabeth Fountain moved to the Parramatta area of Sydney around 1869.Their son William Henry was born in Raymond Terrace in 1868, and another son Robert Alfred was born in Waterloo in 1871.
  • In 1870 John McGregor and Elizabeth Fountain lived in 196 Parramatta Street, Paddington, Sydney, New South Wales. John worked as a drayman.
  • John McGregor witnessed the marriage of George Michael Woods and Janet McGregor on 19 October 1874 in Bringelly, Liverpool, New South Wales. George Michael and Jane were married at the McGregor family home by Edward Holland, Presbyterian Minister. Witnesses to the marriage were Jane's brother John McGregor and James Bell.
  • John McGregor and Elizabeth Fountain moved to Henry Street, Waverley, around 1881.Their home was near Queen's Park.
  • John McGregor died on 28 October 1883 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He worked as a guard on the trams in Sydney and was killed when he fell from a moving tram at Waverley. He died a week later from "injuries accidentally received". An inquest was held into his death on 30th October 1883 by Henry Shiell. John and Elizabeth's last child John Raymond was born seven months later. Its possible that Elizabeth's parents Henry and Lucy Fountain moved in with the family after John's death.
  • John was buried on 30 October 1883 in Waverley Cemetery. He was buried in the family plot purchased by the Fountains. His youngest son Jack was born seven months after his death - the General Section 4, Grave 251.

John McGregor

  • John McGregor was born on 3 November 1856 in Portadown, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. His parents were John MCGREGOR and Ann. He was born in Ireland but moved to Scotland with his parents when he was a boy.
  • He immigrated to Moreton Bay in 1873. He came to Australia on his own at the age of 17 and made his way to the Darling Downs. He lived at Highfileds for six years before he met Agnes Gillis and they married.
  • At the age of 23 years, 3 months and 12 days, John McGregor married Agnes Gillis, daughter of William Gillis and Jane Eyles, on 15 February 1880 in Meringandan, Queensland.
  • John McGregor witnessed the death of William Gillis on 23 October 1882 in Gowrie Little Plain, Queensland; William died of an unknown cause and was buried by order of the Police Magistrate. His son William was the informant of his father's death and he was shown as 76 years old, a blacksmith, born Co. Cork and in the Colony for 35 years. According to William, William senior was married in Brisbane 35 years prior to his death. His children were listed as Frank 30, Ellen 28, Kate 26, William 23, Alice 21, Agnes 20 and Ida 10 (all of the children were actually 2 years older than this).
    The following article appeared in the Darling Downs Gazette dated 25th October 1882 "PAINFULLY SUDDEN DEATH - Through the courtesy of the police, we learn of the sudden death of Mr William Gillis, of Gowrie Little Plain. The sad event occurred about noon on Monday last. The deceased was in the act of stooping to pick up some nails when he fell over, and on being raised expired after a few moments in the arms of his son in law. The deceased who was much respected was about seventy years of age and leaves a widow and children and grandchildren. He had for a long period been a resident in the district."
  • John McGregor witnessed the marriage of Julius (Jul, Jules, John, Hugh) Andersen and Alice Gillis on 24 May 1884; The marriage took place in the residence of the officiating minister, William Rathjen, at Telford Street, Toowoomba. Hugh was a 40 year old bachelor engine driver born Christiana Norway and living at Geham, Highfields. His father was given as Andres Anderson, a post office keeper. Alice was a 26 year old widowed housekeeper born Dalby of Geham and her parents were listed as William Gillis, a farmer and Jane Isles. Witnesses to the marriage were John McGregor and Catherine P Rathjen. Jules signed with his mark.
  • John McGregor was the informant of the death of Jane Eyles on 22 March 1891 in Gowrie Little Plain, Queensland, Australia. Her cause of death was senile decay from which she had been suffering for 18 months. Dr Robers had been her Medical attendant. The informant of her death was her son-in-law John McGregor of Gowrie Little Plain. He stated her parents were Walter Daniel Eyles and Jane Hill and that she had been born in Somerset 63 years ago, having been 30 years in Queensland. Children of her first marriage were Charles Walter Bridgeman 43 and Gary 40 ? and of her second Francis 28, Ellen 26, Katherine 24, Alice 32, William Patrick 30, Agnes 28 and Edith 19 - obviously the ages for the first three children of this marriage are out by 10 years. She had two deceased children, daughters, by her first marriage.
  • John McGregor was the informant of the death of William Patrick Gillis on 9 August 1900 in Toowoomba Hospital. His death was caused by an absess in his throat, pneumonia, and exhaustion. He died after spending a week in the hospital. At the time of his death was a farmer. John McGregor, his brother in law was the informant of his death. He had been married to Eliza Issard since he was 21 years old, and they had 9 (11) living children Ellen 19, Annie 18, Jane 16, Sarah 14, Catherine 12, Henry 9,William 7,George 5,Alice 2 and Ronald Vernon aged 6 months. One child, Agnes, had died an infant.
  • John McGregor witnessed the burial of Charles Daniel Bridgeman on 14 November 1910 in Meringandan Cemetery, Queensland; Charles and Myrah's gravestone reads-
    in loving memory of charles bridgeman died November 12th 1910 aged 65 years erected by his loving wife and family also Myrah Frances Bridgeman died April 10 1936 aged 85 years and 11 months, also infant son Richard Roland died 1895 aged 2 years and 4 months.
  • John McGregor died on 12 January 1929 in Queensland at age 72.
  • John was buried on 13 January 1929 in Toowoomba & Drayton Cemetery. He is buried next to Agnes.

  • John Raymond (Jack) McGregor was born on 14 April 1884 in Waverley, Sydney, New South Wales. The surname was misspelled on the birth certificate as MacGreggor, and registered as MacGregor.
  • He was the son of John McGregor and Elizabeth Fountain.
  • John Raymond (Jack) McGregor was employed by Perth Public Hospital in 1908. Family hearsay has it that, he pushed a wheelbarrow from Sydney to Perth, perhaps down on his luck or prospecting for gold.
  • He was employed in 1910 in the Tramway Workshops, Randwick, Sydney.
  • In 1910 Jack was associated with the Liberal and Reform Assn of NSW.
  • At the age of 26 years, 1 month and 14 days, John Raymond (Jack) McGregor married Winifred Cowing on 28 May 1910 in The Parsonage, Leichardt, New South Wales. The ceremony was conducted according to the rites of the Methodist Church. Witnesses to the marriage were William Mayo Cowling and Gertrude Cowling, Winifred's siblings.
  • John Raymond (Jack) McGregor and Winifred Cowing lived in 9 Paling Street, Lilyfield, Sydney, New South Wales.
  • On 1 February 1919,his wife, Winifred Cowing died in Royal Womens Hospital, Paddington, Sydney, New South Wales. Her death was caused from peritonitis, after suffering a miscarriage.
