  • Byron Jabez (Jabe) Watts was born on 14 November 1893 in Derby, Tasmania. He was the son of Jabez WATTS and Emily Ada ROGERS.
  • He enlisted in the AIF on 1 May 1918 in Wynyard. He was a 24 year old labourer. He gave his birth place as Moorleah, and his next of kin as his father Jabez. Shortly after arriving in England he contracted influenza. He became seriously ill and almost died before being returned to Australia as medically unfit in March 1919.
  • At the age of 26 years, 10 months and 29 days, Byron Jabez (Jabe) Watts married Aleada Mary Burgess, daughter of Edwin Burgess and Harriet Ramskill, on 13 October 1920 in Launceston, Tasmania.
  • Byron Jabez (Jabe) Watts died on 15 September 1937 in Spencer Hospital, Wynyard, Tasmania, at age 43. The Advocate reported:- "WATTS.-On Wednesday, September 15, at the Spencer Hospital, Wynyard, Byron Jabe, dearly beloved husband of Aleada Watts, Wynyard, aged 43 years. (Late 12th Battalion, A.I.F.) Rest at last."
  • On 20 September 1937 Byron Jabez (Jabe) Watts's obituary appeared in The Advocate. It read:- "Late Mr. Byron Jabe Watts
    The death of the late Mr. Byron Jabe Watts, at the Spencer Hospital, Wynyard, in the early hours of Wednesday morning following an accident the
    previous evening, was a great shock to his many relatives and friends. He was born in Derby, and was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Watts. He went
    to the Table Cape district, where he resided until his enlistment in the Great War. He was invalided home in 1919. He married Aleada, fifth daughter
    of Mrs. and the late Mr. E. Burgess, and leaves a widow and six children, two boys, Colin and Ray, and four daughters, Nellie, Joan, Enid and Pamela. The funeral, which took place in the Wynyard cemetery on Friday afternoon, was attended by a large number of relatives, friends and comrades of the 12th and 40th Battalions, including the president (Mr. E. S. Hart) and
    secretary (Mr. A. J. Hutchison), of the Wynyard sub-branch of tho
    R.S.S.I.L.A. and Mr. J. H. Chamberlain, M.H.A., Ulverstone.
    A service was conducted at St. Stephen's' Church, and also at the graveside by Bev. J. AV. Bethune, who paid homage to the departed citizen and soldier.
    Tho casket, which was draped with the Union Jack, was borne to the church and graveside by Messrs. L. C. Flint and J. Moore (12tlh Battalion), and S. Bock and C. A. Maddox (40th Battalion). Members of the R.S.S.I.L.A. formed into line at the entrance to the church and cemetery. The "Last Post" was sounded by Mr. A. E. Frimley, at the conclusion of the service.
    The chief mourners were the widow, father (Mr. J. Watts, Wynyard), brothers, William, Frederick and Hector (Wynyard), and Gordon (Ulverstone), sister,
    Mrs. D. Eeece, uncles, Messrs. William Watts (Bulla), F. Bogers
    (Queenstown), and F. Watts (Moorleah) and other relatives. Among the many beautiful floral tributes was one from members of thoe Wynyard sub-branch of
    the R.S.S.I.L.A."
  • Byron was buried in Wynyard Cemetery. The Advocate reported:- "WATTS.-The funeral of the late Byron Jabe Watts will leave St. Stephen's Church, Wynyard, TO-MORROW (Friday), after a service commencing at 3 p.m., for the New Public Cemetery, Wynyard.-L. H. Porter, Under-taker (phone 134 Wynyard).

    Members of the Wynyard Sub-Branch R.S.S.I.L.A are requested to attend the funeral of their late comrade, Byron Watts, leaving St. Stephen's Church TO-MORROW (Friday), after a service at 3 p.m.-A. J. Hutchison, Secretary."

He embarked from Adelaide on the SS "Gaika" on 6 August 1918. He returned to Australia on 19 October 1919.
