Walter Andrew Scarlett

• Walter Andrew Scarlett was born on 8 November 1891 in Karamea, New Zealand. He was the son of Elizabeth JOHNSON and Charles SCARLETT.
  
• At the age of 19 years and 1 month, Walter Andrew Scarlett married Lilian Elsie Cresswell, daughter of William Daniel Cresswell and Fanny Elizabeth St John, on 8 December 1910 in New Zealand. They had eight children. Walter was and itinerant sawyer who moved his family around the South Island of New Zealand working in sawmills.
  
• Walter Andrew Scarlett and Lilian Elsie Cresswell lived at Stockton Mine, Nelson, at the time their son Theo was killed in an aircrash in the Pacific
  in 1944.
• On 5 June 1944,their son, Theo Raymond Scarlett was killed during air operations in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea, at age 32. Walter and Lilian lived at Stockton Mine, Nelson at the time His plane left from Piva North Airfield on Bougainville on a mission against Rabaul. Over Rapopo Airfield, it was hit by anti-aircraft fire. It caught fire and dived into the ground. Postwar, the wreckage was discovered by RAAF Searcher team and some remains recovered in 1947 and buried locally. Later their remains were exhumed and buried at Bourail Cemetery.
  
• On 27 November 1957,his wife, Lilian Elsie Cresswell died at age 67.

• Hannah Scarth was born between 1842 and 1850 in Yorkshire, England. She was the daughter of George Scarth. According to her immigration records she was born around 1850, but her death registration gives her age as 72 in 1914 - making her year of birth 1842.
  
• Her marriage to John Hodgson was registered in the December 1870 Quarter in Whitby, Yorkshire North Riding Registration District.
• Hannah Scarth and John Hodgson immigrated to Brisbane on 6 April 1888. John aged 39 and Hannah 38, travelled on the Merkara with their sons Matthew 8 and John 12. John snr was a miner and they all came from York, England.

• Gottlieb Ernst Schaefer was born on 11 November 1873 in Government Well, South Australia.
• He was the son of Johann Christian Schaefer and Maria Christina Nerlich.
• In February 1900 Carl and Ernie travelled to Queensland in search of land to settle. They initially found work in the Goombungee area as wood cutters.
  By November of that year Ernie had made application to settle on unsurveyed land at Wutul. Carl applied for his block a few months later. The were both granted a licence to settle in August 1901- Ernie secured Portion 225v, Parish of Cooyar (320 acres) while Carl's land was Portion 227v Parish of Cooyar, an area of 319 acres.

• At the age of 31 years, 2 months and 8 days, Gottlieb Ernst Schaefer married Matilda Emma Wittwer on 19 January 1905 in Robertstown, South Australia. The couple returned to Queensland where three sons were born, all in Crow's Nest. By 1907 he had secured the deed of purchase of his land. The family returned to South Australia in 1909 where Emma was reunited with the family she missed.

• Johann Carl (Charlie) Schaefer was born in 1875 in Kapunda Distict, South Australia.
• He was the son of Johann Christian Schaefer and Maria Christina Nerlich.

• At the age of 39 years, Johann Carl (Charlie) Schaefer married Zillah Vada (Kate) Butterfield, daughter of Chalres Butterfield and Harriet Ellen Wheeler, on 27 May 1914 in Nutgrove. They were married at Charlie's home. According to family hearsay the marriage was not a happy one.
  When their son Oscar was about 11 years old in 1926 Charlie and Kate fostered Kate's niece and nephew aged 4 and 2, the children of Kate's brother.
  Chalie acquired a block of land on the range for Kate and worked it in conjunction with his own. She left Nutgrove around the 1930's leaving Charlie to mind the children, and went to live in Toowoomba. She returned occasionally for a few days, with bills to pay and then after arguements with Charlie would return to Toowoomba.

• At the age of 30 years, 7 months and 4 days, Johann Christian Schaefer married Maria Christina Nerlich on 8 April 1869 in Ebenezer, South Australia.
• On 22 March 1909,his wife, Maria Christina Nerlich died in South Australia at age 61.

Oscar Charles Schaefer

• Oscar Charles Schaefer was born on 10 May 1915 in Queensland.
• He was the son of Johann Carl (Charlie) Schaefer and Zillah Vada (Kate) Butterfield.

• Oscar is remembered by his fostered cousins (niece and nephew of his mother) as "a hot headed cruel person always ready to pick a fight". But he was also considered a good farmer and kind neighbour. He bred prize winning cattle and kept a very neat and tidy farm. He bought 500 acres of McDougall's land when it was split up around 1939.
  After his father's death in 1950, his mother returned to Nutgrove to live with Oscar. She gave him her block of land and he worked all three until his death.
• Oscar Charles Schaefer died in December 1973 in Queensland at age 58. He died from cancer. He was condisered an alcholic by his family. He willed his land to his neighbour and drinking mate Jimmy Schloss "who did noting to earn it". After his death Kate remained in the house until she was taken to a nursing home in Kingaroy.

• Daniel John Schafer was born in 1902 in Queensland. He was the son of Daniel Peter Schafer and Lily Priscilla Wells.

  During the month of April tbe following jobs were called on: Cooyar Sawmill, butter factories and cheese factories at Goombunga, Budua and Crow's Nest; firewood cutters. Crow's Nest. On this particular job I found that three men were employed well under the award rates. This matter has been taken up with the District Secretary to have an Industrial inspector visit this place. Emu Creek Sawmill — at this place I found the accommodation was in a bad state, no light was provided, no brooms, no showers, no veranda, ' no wash basins or washing tubs, and no dining room. These men at this mill are eating their meals in their sleeping quarters. Also, at Crow's Nest, a young girl was employed at the Private Hospital under the award rates'. This matter was taken up with the matronin charge and the arrears for six months were paid to this girl. Harrison Saw mill; Crow's Nest; firewoood depots. Crow's Nest, called on as follows: W. Breise, A. F. Hillenberg, E. Emerson, P. Guy. Men on Hampton Road works ; M.R.C. r/n, Hampton-Esk ' Road; bridge building; Crow's Nest Shire employees (three small gangs) ; Pechey Forestry; Nukinenda Station — at this station arrears of wage's for £3 6s. 4d. was collected on behalf of an employee who is now in the fight ing forces; Lyndhurst Station; Eskdale West, also Eskdale South Station; Esk Butter Factory; Anderson's Sawmill, Esk: Eskdale Station. At all of these stations I found unfinancial members. Tickets were issued and orders signed. Berry's Joinery, Esk; Toogoolawah Sawmill; Private Hospital, Esk; Somerset Dam, also clearing gang: sawmill."

Carl and Ernestine departed from Hamburg on 14 Oct 1865 on the Caesar Godffrey with their children Charles August, Auguste Emilie, and Auguste Alberta. Carl was a labourer. Another son August Charles was born aboard the ship. He died while the family were still in the Immigration Depot in Ipswich.

He was one of over 2000 Allied prisoners of war (POW) held in the Sandakan POW camp in north Borneo, having been transferred there from Singapore as a part of B Force. The 1494 POW's that made up B Force, were transported from Changi on 7 July 1942 on board the tramp ship Ubi Maru, arriving in Sandakan Harbour on 18 July 1942.

• His first job was at Borah Water Holes and Goombungee, then part of Gowrie Station owned by Colonel King, where he shephered sheep. He worked with a brother, camping with the sheep and relying on his family to supply their food. He was paid £20 a year.
  He once made a trip with five thousand drought struck sheep to Cunnamulla with only one person to help him, an aboriginal. He was a shearer and often rode 500 miles to Cunamulla to follow the shearing circuit and be home for Christmas. He also did fencing, and was contracted to the railway.
  
• At the age of 23 years, Frederick Mathias Christy Schefe married Maria Franciska Knack in 1883 in Queensland. They settled at Muniganeen, also known as Prickly Pear Gully (between Goombungee and Meringandan.)
  
• In 1893 Frederick Mathias Christy Schefe and Maria Franciska Knack moved to Bergen where they took over Fred's brother's selection. John had been drowned during a flood the year before. Here they built a slab hut with a large fireplace big enough to hold the camp oven used to bake the bread. The vine scrub was felled, cleared and planted to enable dairying to commence. The cream, sometimes only a small amount, was sent to the depot near the Bergen school. It was then sent to Meringandan, and from there by rail to the Silverwood Butter Factory in Toowoomba. A factory was later built at Crow's Nest and then one at Goombungee. Fred was director of the factory until it closed.
  Fred was the Chairman of the Bergen School committee. He was also involved with the Farmer's Union and the Goombungee-Haden Show Committee.
  Meanwhile Mary ran the local Post Office for a number of years. The mail would arrived by pack horse and was sorted for neighbours to collect three times a week.
