Mr. Robert Woodrow, of Crow's Nest, aged 53 years, a well known farmer, was driving with his wife, in a sulky. The wife alighted to open a gate. As soon as the gate was opened the horse bolted through and down a steep hill. The sulky collided with a stump. Mr. Woodrow was thrown out. He was terribly injured, and died almost instantly. The deceased leaves a grown-up family, most of whom are resident in West Australia."

They were placing a Cross and wreath on the grave. Oh dear Sister it is hard to lose him but it is God's will and he is a t rest.
  I am waiting now for a boat to go home but don't know how long I will have to wait but hope before many weeks to be with you all again. I am not getting my mail these days and the last letters from you and Bessie were written on the 9th Nov. I had one from Jack written on the 29th November. Well dear Ethel forgive this short note but I trust all are well and hope to be with you all again before long.

• At the age of 35 years, 6 months and 2 days, Donald Charles Woods married Sarah Elizabeth (Bessie) Staines, daughter of Joseph Staines and Sarah Jane Crawford, on 14 November 1917 in Bonnie Brae, Crawford, Queensland, Australia. Don and Bessie were married after his return from WW1.

Sarah aged 40, came to Australia with her four children: - Sarah Ann aged 16, a native of Middlesex who could read and write; George Michael aged 14, also a native of Middlesex who could read and write, Church of England; Emma Mary aged 11 who could read and write and was a native of Middlesex; and Robert Henry aged 7, a native of Middlesex. They travelled from England on the Parsee, her husband George having immigrated some time before. She was listed on "Parsee’s passenger list under Section Headed - "Wives of Persons Resident in the Colony". From the Depositors Record it shows a Dr Dodd (Todd) of Kent Road Bermondsey, London gave a good character reference for Sarah and her children to emigrate. Dr George Michael Todd was Sarah's half brother, son of her mother's first husband. She was from Middlesex and religion Church of England. She could read and write and was a housekeeper. The ship left Southampton on the 7 June 1859 and reached Sydney after a voyage lasting 95 days. There were 424 immigrants on board.

Ruby may have been concerned for her sister's health as Ethel was six months pregnant with Ruby Isabel at the time.

• On 26 January 1911 Dorothy wrote a post card to her parents who were staying at Brunswick Heads. She wrote " Dear Mamma, We are all well. It has been raining nearly all the time since you left. We are having a good time up here. School is going to start in two or three weeks time. Auntie Bessie will write soon with love from all. your loving Dorothy". A note added by Bessie reads "No Special News, all well B". COMPILERS NOTE:- Ethel and William must have left the children with their grandparents Sarah and Joseph Staines while they were away. Aunt Bessie would have been Sarah Elizabeth Staines.

  "Teven Wednesday. Dear E. Just a few lines to let you know how we are. Mother seems very much better this last few days and thinks the Dr told her all wrong. We are having it dry down here. • In December 1920 Ethel Mary Stuart Woods and William John Staines were living in Quebec, Mundubbera, Queensland. It is not clear when they moved here but the family returned to Kingaroy after spending a few years on this property. Documents found suggest the house was purchased as a kit from Filshie & Broadfoot in Toowoomba. In 2013 the property was a citrus orchard.
  
• On 22 June 1922 Topsy Jackson (nee Isabelle Cruickshanks) wrote to Ethel Staines.

  Dear Ethel
  Your very nice letter arrived during last week and I can assure you we all appreciate your sympathy. Mum suffered great agony for almost a week before she left us and last on Sunday when the Doctor said the case was hopeless he ordered the nurse to give larger doses of morphia and so took away all pain. Indeed Mum said that it would be a relief to go after the last three years, so now we try to feel comforted that she is no longer suffering though we do miss her.
  Mum had been suffering all along but in her brave way tried to hide it from us.
  She had been very ill for over a week, but was recovering wonderfully and on the Monday commenced fresh knitting and was reading a lot. That night I made the bed and she got back in quite cheerfully. Next thing I heard Dad calling for a light. Mum had fainted and fallen out of bed before he could catch her. She was very ill from then until the last just a week after. Of course we sent for Bill and Mum was able to talk to all of us just a few hours before she left us.
  The trouble was really cancer though she never knew. The doctor told dad not to tell her. It gradually worked through the whole system. Thank you for your invitation. I should love to come one day, but not just yet.

William is shown as a grazier and Ethel carried out home duties. Their daughters Elizabeth (Betty), a teacher and Dorothy, home duties also lived with them. According to family hearsay William had owned part of "Belgrove" where his brother Sam farmed and Sam died in 1932 the property was sold. However, Amy, Sam's wife continued to appear on the electoral role with her address as "Belgrove" up until the 1950's.
  
• In December 1931 Beatrice Grant wrote to Ethel Staines regarding the death of Bee’s grandmother Elizabeth McGregor (nee Fountain).

  Your letter has just come so I am answering it at once to give your Grannies’ address. It is "Beverley" Ray Road, Epping.
  Poor old soul has just about reached her end. About a month ago or it may be six weeks she took ill with cancer of the stomach, and has been very sick. Mother's letter today says she is weakening very much and the Doctor says she is likely to go off any time. She is suffering great pain and has to have morphia to ease her. Father went down on Saturday to see her. Poor old soul was 88 on Sunday. It seems hard that she should have such an end after the wonderfully active life she has led, and she has lived to a good age.
  No Ethel I have not been at all well, and am going away on Friday down to Terrigal till at least the end of February. I feel the heat here very much and am never well really in the summer time. I really do not like going and leaving Mr Grant for Christmas, but he will not hear of me staying. It is always such a busy time for me, and I don't feel that I can cope with all the work in the heat. Dorothy is needing a holiday too. Bruce keeps very well. He is such a dear little chap and getting on so well. You would not know him now. They will all love him at home I'm sure.
  I haven't seen Alex for months. He came in about three weeks ago on Sunday to take us for a drive, but I was sick at the time, and in bed. When are he and Dorrie going to be married? I've been going to write to Dorrie several times but the days just simply fly and I am kept busy with the sewing and lots of other duties.
  Unfortunately at the beginning of the year I lost my good girl, and have had no less than four since. The one I have now has been with me six months, but not any one of them is as good as Ruth was.
  Yes we have had plenty of rain, and it makes it so close and muggy, but you Queensland people have had more than your share. Isn't it disappointing too when the rain comes and spoils all the garden, after one has worked so hard. While your people and we on the North Coast have the rain, the poor folk out West in NSW are having the bush fires. They must be awful out Cobar way.
  Of course I am very busy packing up and seeing to everything. There is always such a lot to do at the last with children, but it’s worth it when there is a nice change at the end of it al. We are going to Terrigal, just out of Gosford to Mother, and may have two or three weeks in Sydney.
  I must close now, and get on with my work, but wanted to let you have Grannies address without delay.

"Mr W J Staines, who has disposed of his "Fernbank" property to Mr L A Savage, Brooweena, leaves with Mrs Staines and family, for Noosa today. Sarah aged 40, came to Australia with her four children: - Sarah Ann aged 16, a native of Middlesex who could read and write; George Michael aged 14, also a native of Middlesex who could read and write, Church of England; Emma Mary aged 11 who could read and write and was a native of Middlesex; and Robert Henry aged 7, a native of Middlesex. They travelled from England on the Parsee, her husband George having immigrated some time before. She was listed on "Parsee’s passenger list under Section Headed - "Wives of Persons Resident in the Colony". From the Depositors Record it shows a Dr Dodd (Todd) of Kent Road Bermondsey, London gave a good character reference for Sarah and her children to emigrate. Dr George Michael Todd was Sarah's half brother, son of her mother's first husband. She was from Middlesex and religion Church of England. She could read and write and was a housekeeper. The ship left Southampton on the 7 June 1859 and reached Sydney after a voyage lasting 95 days. There were 424 immigrants on board.

• At the age of 29 years and 2 months, George Michael Woods married Janet McGregor, daughter of William McGregor and Mary Stuart, on 19 October 1874 in Bringelly, Liverpool, New South Wales. . George Michael and Jane were married at the McGregor family home by Edward Holland, Presbyterian Minister. Witnesses to the marriage were Jane's brother John McGregor and James Bell.
  
• George Michael Woods's and Janet McGregor's first child Emma Fleet was born on 16 July 1875 in 96 Albion Street, Surry Hills. She died when she was almost one year old and was buried on her birthday. • In 1883 George Michael Woods and Janet McGregor lived in Ballina, New South Wales, Australia. Family hear say has it that he was apprenticed to a Pastry Cook when the family first came to Australia, and later became a butcher first class. George and Jane(t) lived in North Sydney where he started a butcher shop after they were married. However due to the amount of standing he had to leave this line of work and they moved to Teven in 1883 when Donald was just 1 and a half years old.
  
• George Michael Woods became a farmer. The 1885 Landowners return shows that George Michael owned 40 acres of land at Teven Creek, Lismore and he also owned one horse and three cattle
  in 1885.

  I have lost the address of the McGregors in Sydney but have written to Will McGregor who was formerly in Western Australia, but is now postal inspector at Junee NSW, and he will advise the others.
  I have lost track of your bunch for a long time but understand all the Woods boys are up in your district and would like to make a trip to Kingaroy some time if I could spare the time.
  I come to Brisbane two or three times a year, but only for a few days at a time. I will be there for four or five days in the middle of next month (March), but that is not a good time of the year for Queensland.
  We are having a hot spell in Melbourne just now and this is the fourth day at 100 in the shade. It is a dry heat so not so trying as Sydney.
  My family are all well including my wife. I suppose you know I have three children, the eldest a boy (Geoff) 12 1/2, the second a girl (Phyllis) nearly 11, and the third a boy (Keneth) nearly two. I suppose you can beat that hollow.
