Johann (Frederick) Zropf

M, b. 4 June 1849, d. 1 May 1915
  • Johann (Frederick) Zropf was born on 4 June 1849 in Cottbus, Brandenberg, Germany.
  • He was the son of Johann Christian Zropf and Johanna Wilhelmina Christina Handroeck/Handreg.
  • Johann (Frederick) Zropf immigrated on 16 October 1878 to Queensland with Johanna Wilhelmina Christina Handroeck/Handreg and Gustav (Emil) Zropf. Johanna 57, and Emil aged 19 travelled on the Friedeburg which sailed from Hamberg on 22 June, as full paying passengers. Johann F, aged 29, Wilhelm aged 14 (who died on the voyage) and Maria 12 years 6 months travelled as Assisted passengers. According to newspaper reports the family moved to the Ravensbourne district not long after their arrival.
  • At the age of 31 years, Johann (Frederick) Zropf married Maria Schwer in 1881 in Queensland.
  • Johann (Frederick) Zropf was naturalised in 1886.
  • Conditional approval for Johann (Frederick) Zropf and Johann (Frederick) Zropf's selection of landwas given on 24 November 1888. He selected 79 acres at Beauaraba (near Ravensbourne). He was also fined for withdrawing from the ballot for another 80 acres of land at Ravensbourne. "For the agricultural township farms adjoining the village of Ravensbourne there was great competition, many of the portions being applied for from four to ten times over. The ballot had to be resorted to in no less than 50 cases; this, with the refunding of the amounts paid by the unsuccessful applicants, necessarily occupied a deal of time, and it was not till half-past 6 O'clock that the business was concluded, and the court closed. By 7 o'clock the whole of the refundments had been paid over to 115 applicants. The 76 portions adjoining the village of Ravensbourne, granted at the land court, were apportioned among 62 selectors, so there is every probability of the village settlement of Ravensbourne proving a success. The total area granted at the court was 5025 acres among 68 applicants."
  • In February 1894 Fred and Charles' applications for a certificate for their land in Parish Beauaraba (Ravensbourne) was adjourned pending inspection of the properties.
  • He witnessed the death of Maria Schwer on 30 April 1896 in Queensland.
  • Johann (Frederick) Zropf built a cottege for Friedrich Reushle and Martha Dunn. Just before their marriage in 1900, Mr Zropf built a cottage for Fred and Martha Dunn on Fred's land what is now Post Office Road, Ravensbourne. The floors and wall framing were constructed with tallowwood and the interior wall were made from local hoop pine. The windows were made from silky oak and Queensland red cedar. A kitchen annexe was added at the back. Later a store room to one side.
In 2003 the cottage was moved to Chapman Park at Hampton where it was reconstructed using many of the old-style building techniques. It now houses the Visitors Information Centre.
  • In 1901 Frederick was listed as a farmer at Ravensbourne on the Crow's Nest Post Office directory.
  • Johann (Frederick) Zropf appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1905 living at Ravensbourne. Johann was a farmer.
  • He was farming at Ravensbourne on 12 May 1908 when his son Johann (Fred)erick Zropf was attacked by a bull. Fred had a lucky escape when he was attached by a bull on his father's farm at Ravensboourne. The following article appeared in the Rockhampton Morning Bulletin on 19 May 1908:- The Toowoomba correspondent of the Brisbane '' Daily Mail," telegraphing on the 12th instant, says :-" A rather sensational experience occurred to a boy named Fred Zropf, aged fifteen years, on his father's farm at Ravensbourne yesterday afternoon. It appears that Zropf was in one of the paddocks when a bull charged him. There was no chance of escape, and the infuriated beast tossed the boy all over the place. Fortunately Zropf was attended by his dog and, although he was being buttered and tossed about by the beast, he was able to retain his presence of mind and urge his dog on to the animal. The dog unmercifully heeled the bull, which at last turned his attention from the boy to the dog, and the latter held the bull at bay until some of the unfortunate lad's brothers rushed to his assistance and drove the beast off. The lad has no bones broken, but he is cut and bruised about terribly. One of the bull's horns pierced his chest. He has a severe lacerated wound on the left thigh and is otherwise badly bruised and cut. His life was undoubtedly saved by the dog attacking the bull."
  • Johann (Frederick) Zropf died on 1 May 1915 in Toowoomba, Queensland, at age 65.
  • Johann was buried on 3 May 1915 in Cabarlah Cemetery.
  • On 4 May 1915Johann (Frederick) Zropf's orbituary appeared in The Brisbane Courier. It read:- " Death of an Old Pioneer. Mr J F Zropf one of the oldest residents in the Ravensbourne district, having been there 26 years, died in the Toowoomba Hospital on Saturday (our Crow’s Nest correspondent telegraphed).
He met with a serious accident on his farm recently, causing his death. He arrived in Australia 35 years ago, and had been successfully engaged in farming at Ravensbourne for the past 26 years. He was one of the first pioneers of that district.
He leaves a grown up family of one daughter and four sons. He was buried in the Highfields Cemetery yesterday."

Caroline Reithmuller deposed : I am sister of the deceased Amelia Zupp ; I was seated in my brother in-law's dray when it went out from Toowoomba ; the horses went quietly until they reached the hill on the Spring Creek side of the race course ; one of the reins got under the shaft of the dray, when Zupp jumped down to put them in order ; the horses ran on to the fence and Zupp jumped back to save himself ; the horses then bolted and ran for about half -a- mile ; one of the wheels then struck a stump and the dray fell over; my sister and myself, were thrown to the ground ; I was only slightly bruised having been thrown clear of the dray ; when I got up I saw my sister lying near the dray with her baby beside her ; I cannot say whether the dray struck my sister ; I told my sister to get up, but she pointed only to the baby and said there is the child ; Caspar Heinrich came by and lifted my sister from the ground, and supported her until her husband arrived ; she was afterwards taken home in a spring cart and attended by Dr. Anderson ; about an hour after the accident my sister died ; the baby was not hurt ; at her house she said she pitied the poor man and her child ; she said she felt as if her back was broken, and kept calling for water. Dr. Anderson deposed : Shortly after 12 o'clock yesterday I was called to see the deceased, Amelia Zupp; when I reached the house, a few minutes afterwards, I saw deceased ; she was in a state of collapse ; I administered restoratives, but she died a few minutes after I arrived ; I believe death was caused by internal injuries arising from a violent fall from a dray."
