  • Sir Walter Benjamin Campbell was born on 4 March 1921 in Burringbar, New South Wales. He was the son of son of Archie Eric Gordon Campbell MC DSO, business manager, and his wife Leila Mary Murphy.
  • He was educated at Toowoomba Christian Brothers Convent (1931), Woodlawn College, Lismore (1932-36), and Downlands College, Toowoomba (1937-39), where he was dux (1938 and 1939), school captain (1939) and its first Open Scholar.
  • He began military service. In 1940, he commenced his studies at the University of Queensland, but these were interrupted by war service. Campbell served as a pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force (1941-46), initially as a flying instructor and finally as a flight commander in a Liberator squadron.
  • At the age of 20 years, 11 months and 14 days, Sir Walter Benjamin Campbell married Lady Georgina Pearce, daughter of George Pearce and Margaret Ann Trousdell, on 18 February 1942 in Toowoomba. At the time of their marriage Georgina was a school teacher. They had three children.
  • Campbell also graduated Bachelor of Arts (1944). After the war, he graduated Master of Arts (1947) and Bachelor of Laws with first class honours (1948).

    On 16 March 1948, Campbell was admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland. He then commenced a period of 19 years as a practising barrister in Brisbane, taking silk on 27 October 1960. Campbell served as president of the Queensland Bar Association (1965-67) president of the Australian Bar Association (1966-67), special lecturer in law at the University of Queensland (1948-65), member of the Supreme Court library committee (1961-67), and a member of the senate of the University of Queensland (1963-85).

    On 13 July 1967, Campbell was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland. He was knighted in 1979, and appointed the fourteenth chief justice of Queensland on 18 February 1982. During his tenure on the court, he also served as chairman of the Queensland Law Reform Commission (1969-73), chancellor of the University of Queensland (1977-85) and deputy chair of the Queensland Theatre Company (1969-78). He resigned from the court on 7 July 1985, to become governor of Queensland. He was appointed a Knight of the Order of St John of Jerusalem (1986) and a Companion of the Order of Australia (1989). Campbell retired from the office of governor on 28 July 1992.
  • Sir Walter Benjamin Campbell died on 4 September 2004 in New Farm at age 83.
